Best Tarpon Fishing Spots in Florida
Beach Fishing
Literally hundreds of beaches in south Florida — both the west coast and east coast — are great for surf fishing, with dozens of tarpon cruising just off the beach in as little as 3 feet of water. You'll see them rolling on the surface for air, so that you can cast just ahead of them. Surf fishing for tarpon is an excellent approach for the light-tackle or fly-fishing angler who wants to test his skills against this monster of a fish.
Boca Grande Pass
For many years, Boca Grande Pass was the site of the "World's Richest Tarpon Tournament" with prizes totaling $250,000. The Boca Grande Chamber of Commerce, which has sponsored the tournament since 1991, called a hiatus for the tournament for 2007 — but there are still plenty of tarpon in and around the waters of the pass. Hundreds of big "silver kings" can be found, particularly in and around the two deep holes in the pass. Tarpon fishing from a boat in Boca Grande Pass is most successful with heavy tackle.
Florida Everglades
The immense Everglades offers literally hundreds of great spots to cast for tarpon. The biggest tarpon are usually found at the outer edges of the 'glades, while the younger ones are found in the numerous creeks and bays. Tarpon can be found around the Everglades from March through October, and in the warm waters of the creeks, rivers and bays throughout the year.
Florida Keys
Tarpon fishing is good year-round in the Keys. The western side (Florida Bay side) of the keys sees the best tarpon fishing starting in around mid-March, and the fishing is good on both the bay side and the Atlantic side in July.
