Go Tarpon Fishing
The majestic tarpon is a dizzying beauty — a true prize for any angler.
Sometimes reaching 200 lbs., tarpon are the game fisherman's game fish — the game fish that gives you bragging rights like no other, especially if you successfully land a huge one on light tackle. For the fisherman who enjoys a good fight, there's nothing like a tarpon to test your skills, and nothing like a tarpon to reward your patience. The tarpon's fighting spirit and spectacular aerobatic leaps are impressive and awe-inspiring.
The Tarpon Fishing Capital of the World
While there are many great tarpon fishing spots in the waters around south Florida, Boca Grande Pass at the mouth of Charlotte Harbor on the west coast of Florida is the king of all tarpon fishing locations.
During the height of tarpon season in Boca Grande Pass, the tarpon are so dense in the pass that it almost looks possible to walk across the water from Boca Grande to Cayo Costa on the backs of the tarpon. The surface of the water appears to be boiling with tarpon, as they engage in a process called "rolling," in which they break the surface to gulp air. The fishing boats are almost as densely packed as the tarpon, as they drift through the pass with the tide.
Tarpon Fishing Throughout Florida
But Boca Grande Pass is certainly not the only place in Florida where you can fish for one of these big-game fish. Tarpon are plentiful along the both the Atlantic Coast and the Gulf Coast as far north as the panhandle, and the Florida Keys enjoy tarpon fishing year-round.
